Dedicated to June Louise
For her endless love and support
This collection of pieces continues my exploration into combining Indian Classical singing technique with electronic soundscapes. For many years I have studied Kirana Gharana singing technique with Noe Dinnerstein. Noe studied singing with the great Pt. Pran Nath and Smt. Sheila Dhar while working and recording with minimalist composer, La Monte Young and visual artist, Mariam Zazeela. I owe much of my knowledge to Noe and I am infinitely grateful to be a small part of this incredible musical tradition. The raga improvisation techniques I learned through these studies are adapted and re-contextualized on this album.
For many years, I have also been preforming and recording within the New York free improvisation scene as a synth player and vocalist. I have played in hundreds of electro-acoustic ensembles around the city with players such as William Hooker, Marc Edwards, Hans Tammen, Nebula the Velvet Queen, and Mo Kubbara. In my solo work, these sound worlds of electronic experimentation and North Indian Classical music collide in new flowing structures.
In my compositions, I want to create futuristic music by unearthing sounds from our distant past. Words from ancient Indian compositions weave in and out of improvised passages using extended vowel sounds and the Indian solfege syllables.
My music creates the illusion of stillness and motion simultaneously, mixing the formless with form. The synthetic droning textures and shifting melodies move freely as dense percussive elements create playful rhythmic mosaics. Streams of sound dance between meditative trance and intricate layers of rhythm and sound design.
Sounds and ideas from all over the world are incorporated and transformed. Elements of jazz, latin music, gamelan, western orchestral music and African percussion music blend with synth textures and highly processed samples.
I hope this album brings some peaceful vibrations during these strange, difficult times.
